Here are the answers to some Frequently Asked Questions

If you are serious about growing spiritually, then you need to become familiar with the Christian spiritual disciplines. Although there are more than ten of them, the three main ones can take you far and you can develop additional disciplines as you strengthen your walk with God.

The first discipline that you should incorporate into your life is Bible reading. The Bible, being the very words of God, is “…profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Daily Bible reading can help you hear God’s voice of wisdom and instruction so that you can grow in grace.

Secondly, you should become a person of prayer.Prayer is vital to the Christian life – as E.M. Bounds wrote,“When faith ceases to pray, it ceases to live.” Prayer is God’s way for us to communicate with Him and it is both a privilege and a discipline.

There are four basic elements of prayer:

  • Praise / Adoration: We give to God the recognition and response that His glory demands.
  • Confession: We tell God where we have sinned and agree with Him that it is against His law.
  • Thanksgiving: We return thanks to God for who He is and what He has done both for us and also in us.
  • Petition / Intercession: We ask God to give or do what we desire of Him. This can be on our own behalf (petition) or for the sake of others (intercession).

Not ever prayer has to include every element but they do provide a good starting point for making our prayers fuller and more all-inclusive.

The third discipline is worship – both public and private. Worship is how we show reverence and adoration for God, especially in light of who He is. We are to worship in “Spirit and truth”(John 4:24), indicating that our worship is to be characterized by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and to be done in the way that the Bible prescribes.

The other spiritual disciplines are in a sense subordinate to these three. In other words, without these three, the others are emptied of their meaning. Culver City Christian Counseling can help you develop all of the spiritual disciplines so that you can see true spiritual growth in your life.

Although Donald Whitney lists ten questions you can ask yourself to determine whether you are in a state of spiritual wellness in his book Ten Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health, we will examine three.

In Psalm 42:1-2, the psalmist says that “As a deer pants for flowing streams,so pants my soul for you, O God.My soul thirsts for God,for the living God.”

Do you truly thirst for God? Do you desire to know not just more about Him, but to truly know Him? Do you deeply desire to experience more of his presence? If you cannot answer yes to this question, you should consider what that says about your spiritual condition.

1 John 4:20-21 tells us that we must love our fellow Christians. If we do not, then according to 1 John, we cannot claim to love God. Do you love your fellow Christians? Do you love joining with them in public worship? Do you consider them closer family than your own flesh and blood? This is a key question to ask yourself in order to determine if you are living in a state of spiritual wellness.

A third question to ask yourself is whether you are seeking to live more and more according to God’s Word. In John 14:15, Jesus says “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Is this true of you? Do you try to obey Christ’s commands more and more? Does the smile of God mean more to you than the smile of the world?

Of course, we are saved by faith, not by our works, but if our faith does not result in good works then it is evidence that our faith is not genuine, indicating that we are not spiritually well. If this is your situation, contact us at Culver City Christian Counseling. We would love to help you find your way back to God.

The term “spiritual awakening” is hard to define.Every religion has its own version of spiritual awakening and many of them conflict with each other. Further, most of them conflict with how the Bible views spiritual awakening.

Ephesians 2:1 teaches that we were all “dead in [our] trespasses and sins” and that being dead, we are utterly unable to help ourselves or do anything to save ourselves. However, when the Holy Spirit comes, He makes alive that which was dead, and changes our hearts so that rather than hate God as we did when spiritually dead, we now love God because we have spiritual life. In Christianity, we call this spiritual awakening.
