Mental exhaustion can feel like an illness. It drains your energy, fogs your mind, and makes it hard to regulate your emotions. Learning how to beat mental exhaustion to improve your mental and emotional health will influence not only your physical health, but also your mindset and mood.

Tips for Relieving Mental Exhaustion

Mental exhaustion can bring fatigue and a lack of motivation. You may find yourself feeling anxious, depressed, and tired. Mental exhaustion can also contribute to sleep and appetite changes, tension headaches, digestive issues, brain fog, and a negative outlook on life.

The following are several tips for relieving mental exhaustion.

Take time for yourself

Often, mental exhaustion results from overcommitting or stretching yourself too thin with unrealistic expectations. Mental exhaustion can also occur if you are in an overwhelming situation, such as a stressful job or caring for an ill family member.

Learn to take time out for yourself. Prioritize rest and sleep to give your mind and body time to repair and recover. Sleep deprivation and little rest can make it difficult to regulate and process emotions.

Set boundaries

Set goals and boundaries that align with your beliefs and values. When you live outside of these, you will feel anxious and depressed. Learn to say no when needed. You may need to review your commitments and choose a few to follow through on while letting the others go.

If you are worried about hurting people’s feelings, try saying, “Thank you for thinking of me, but I cannot commit to that at this time.”

Take a break from noise and devices

As mental exhaustion takes its toll, focusing your mind becomes more challenging. You can become overstimulated and unable to process everything happening around you. Take a break from noise and devices throughout the day. Try to rest in a quiet, darkened room, away from screens and noise, for a few minutes.

Another option is to try headphones while working or reading. Noise-cancelling headphones could help your mind “reboot” and lead you to feel calmer.

Avoid or eliminate stressors

Overwhelming stress contributes to mental exhaustion. Avoiding or eliminating triggers can help calm your nervous system. Try deleting tasks and responsibilities, avoiding triggers, or delegating things until you have had time to heal.

Ask friends and family for help if you are in a situation where quitting is not an option, such as caretaking. Is there someone who can relieve you for a few hours daily? Consider reaching out online for hired help if you need it.

Get back to your love

Get back to the activities that you once enjoyed. Getting back to doing things you love helps the brain release chemicals like serotonin, leaving you feeling happy and content. Schedule time daily or weekly to take a break and engage in a hobby or activity. You may want to make a list of your favorite hobbies, both indoor and outdoor.

Some examples could include bicycling, playing golf, going fishing, crocheting, reading, painting, or playing a musical instrument.
