Taking care of yourself is one of the best things you can do not only for yourself but for your loved ones. Think about it – when you take care of yourself, and that includes making sure you’re doing things basic to a daily routine like resting enough and eating healthy food, these things help you to be healthy. When you’re healthy you can do your job, you’re able to help and care for others, and so much more.
Self-care enables you to handle the things you need and want to accomplish. Being able to set a self-care routine that promotes your well-being is a priority because it affects many other areas of your life.
Self-care ideas for a daily routine
Self-care is about finding things that work for you and bring you joy, relaxation, good health, and overall well-being. In this way, self-care is personal, so it’s important to experiment until you find a routine with elements that work for you. If you’re not a runner and your doctor doesn’t recommend it, there’s no point in incorporating that into your routine. Do what works for you, and not what works for others.
Some self-care ideas that you could put together to form your daily routine include the following:
Consistent sleep routine
Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time in the morning. Good sleep hygiene makes a world of difference in your ability to self-regulate your emotions and mood.
Hydrate well
Take a full glass of water as soon as you wake up to rehydrate after a night of sleep.
Morning meditation
Take some time, perhaps 5-10 minutes of quiet reflection and prayer. Instead of picking your phone up to scour social media for content, have a prayer or meditation journal that helps you commit your day to the Lord and start it with set intentions.
Gratitude Journaling
Perhaps alongside or separate from your morning meditation, you can journal and start the day by writing down three things you’re grateful for. This helps you cultivate a positive outlook on the day, and these practices help build emotional resilience.
Stretching
You can take about 10-15 minutes to stretch gently to loosen up your muscles. Along with stretching, you can use relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery to help calm your mind and body as you start your day.
Exercise
Whether you’re taking a walk outside to enjoy God’s beautiful creation, going for a hike on a beautiful trail, riding a bike, or dancing, getting exercise is a wonderful way to not only boost your mood, but also improve cardiovascular health.
Healthy eating
We need nourishing foods and liquids like water to nourish our bodies and minds. Make time to buy and prepare healthy and balanced meals.
Creative expression
Our Creator made us with the capacity to imitate Him and the beautiful works that come from His hand. Set aside time for a creative activity that brings you joy, like drawing, writing, playing music, crocheting, or sculpting.
Grooming
Another important part of healthy living is having a consistent skincare or grooming routine to help you feel confident and refreshed. Not only that, but grooming and personal hygiene habits like bathing, brushing your teeth, washing your hands after using the bathroom, and keeping your nails clean help you and the people around you to prevent illnesses that are easily transmitted.
Digital detox
We live in a wonderful time, with a wide range of digital devices available to us, such as phones, laptops, TVs, and tablets. We also have streaming platforms, apps, and online platforms that give us access to entertainment and information from around the world. Set boundaries regarding screen time to protect your mental and emotional well-being. You can set a daily reminder to put your devices down
Evening cool-down or reflection
At the end of each day, give yourself a few minutes to simply reflect on your day, taking time to acknowledge the things you accomplished and pinpoint any areas of growth.
Reading or learning
Life is all about growing as individuals into fuller maturity so that we can be who God made us to be. Dedicate time each day to reading a book or learning something new to expand your knowledge. Another benefit of reading is that it can help provide a relaxing escape from the pressures of everyday life.
